[resolved] osticket 1.9.12 install help needed

So I originally tried installing osticket on the current version of ubuntu (This is was like ver 16 something) and ran into what I believe was the php7 issue. (Had a previous post about that) So I gave up on that and reinstalled Ubuntu with version 14 and I am STILL getting nothing but Error 500 with no other info as to why its not working. Nothing I do seems to get ostickets working. I have followed walkthroughs I found online and I have used the built in LAMP install from the ubuntu install. phpinfo works and shows everything but osticket never does. I never get the setup to come up. I get as far as unzipping the file and changing the permissions to www-data. Can someone help me figure out what I am doing wrong? Thanks!

Ubuntu 14.04
PHP 5.5.9
MySQL 14.14

  • You should probably use PHP 5.6 and you would want to look at the PHP error log.
  • Ok its been upgraded to php 5.6.23, still no change. Which file would i find php errors? All i can find points me to the apache error log file. ill do some more searching on the php error log.
  • Q: Which file would i find php errors?
A: The one specified in your php.ini.
  • It by default didnt have an error log set in php.ini. I configured one and restarted apache. This is all it gives me in that error log when i try to load the folder containing the osticket files. I am about done with this. No matter what I do gets it working.

  • Ok I finally got the installer to come up by recursively setting the entire osticket folder of files to 775. I dont know enough about the permissions if this is bad or not. it was all I could find when searching for those errors. At least I am finally making progress and not staring at a blank error 500 screen.
  • Permission denied means that your PHP instances (which is run as the same user that your webserver is running as) cannot access the files.  You can either change the ownership of the files to the webservers username, or you can alter the permissions on the files.  Which you did.

    775 means
Owner all permission (Read, Write, Execute)
Group members all permissions (Read, Write, Execute)
    All others Read and Execute.
  • I originally changed them all to www-data from root. So far looks like I am ok with the 775 change. Im working through the installer now. Thanks for the help.
  • Glad to be of assistance.
Once you get through that please feel free to start another thread for any issues you encounter or questions you have.
