Email Integration for SSL/TLS

Recently discovered that although the email settings from the Admin portal update successfully the SMTP server settings are not working. Our server requires that Port 587 is used along with TLS (Transport Layer Security). To my knowledge TLS is not natively supported and is most likely the reason that no system email are being sent out. Has anyone found a way around this? A potential fix that will allow TLS support would really be great.
